Metlife - Workforce Insights and Analytics Solution
Overview
MetLife’s Corporate Communications team sought better visibility into how their global messages were resonating, using Yammer (now Viva Engage) conversations mapped to key performance indicators. These were rolled up into PowerBi Dashboards that executives could share and pivot into the trends.
The Challenge
Data retrieved out of Viva Engage needed to be classified using Natural Language Processing techniques which have to account for cultural differences. The Japanese express themselves differently than Europeans, for example. With that solved, the tools are not designed to talk to each other directly well.
Key challenges included:
- Indexing all of the Yammer messages and respect the Microsoft 365 API limitations.
- Training meaningful sentiment classifiers to the various cultures.
- Getting PowerBI connectivity to the indexed data
- Structuring the dashboards and data in a meaninful way so executives can self service their future questions
Solution

This was solutioned by implementing a connector to Yammer and feeding all of the messages through an indexing pipeline. In that indexing pipeline, the messages had Named Entity Recognition performed on them and sentiment classification. The tags that were produced were organized into a taxonomy that related to various corporate communication initiatives.
